Charlotte, North Carolina is home to the USNWC(U.S National Whitewater Centre). It has a great slalom course that will again host our Olympic Team Trials next year. If I want to have a great race at these Trials I will have to get all the practice I can get on the course. I will be down south for a little more than a month to get lots of training on and off the water.

Long Time no see

It has just been over a year since I have updated, I guess I just fell out of the whole blogging thing.

But, A lot has happened over the year and I'm sure there will be more news to come.

This year has been a big one. After racing in Mexico for the Pan-American Championships in January 2011, it was race prep for the 2011 National Team Trials which decides who will go to Europe for the World Cup Series and World Championships in September. I was a top contender to make it this year after my 3rd place finish last Team Trials(unfortunatly I didnt make the percentage to get on the team).

This years Team Trials was originally going to be held in Jonquiere, Quebec but due to high water it was changed to Valleyfield, PQ. I had an all-right week leading up to the race but I still felt determined to make the team. The race scheldue was a two day event with 2 runs on each day. Each run was a little mini race so you had to do well on all of them but if you did mess up on one, you could throw that one out as only three counted.

The first day went excellent for me. I felt great and I was able to transfer all that energy to my 2 runs. My first run I was only 10th's of a second off the top women and I quickly made percentage. For my second run I pulled through and won that run. I felt great the rest of the day and felt really confident on making the team. Thank you to the Daniels for the great sushi dinner, maybe sushi's my secret pre- race winner dinner!

I had a good sleep and the second day came around. I saw the new course set the night before so I was already visualizing my race run. I felt great, just like the day before and I knew I was going to make the National team. First runs came and I didn't do so well. I hit a lot of gates and the time was slow. I reassured myself that this run would be thrown out and I would have my second run to make it. I still felt physically good but I think mentally, I was not. Second runs came and went within a minute. Again my run wasn't the greatest, I still hit gates even though I tried my best not to hit them and because of that my time was slow. I felt un-focused and I felt exhausted without being physically tired.

I did not make the National Team, even though I had a stellar first day. I felt confused and frustrated on why I couldn't hold onto that focused, positive energy I had on the first day and pull through to make the team. I am now holding on the fact that I am 17 and had my first, real international experience last summer at the 2010 Junior World Championships and that I do not have that high intensity and and stressful race experience that many of the other girls have. I will not have that age/maturity gap be my excuse, it will only empower me to get better technically, mentally and physically stronger from what I am now to where I will be the top woman in Canada.

So anyways, I had a moment to myself to let out all the emotions and to look back on my race runs. When I came back to the racesite to socialize again I found out by my club coach Jon Allen that one of the women weren't going to 2 of the world cups and because I was 4th boat I had a chance to go to these races in place of her. I was extremely happy about this. I left that Team Trials witha low note of not making the National Team but also with a high note that I would still go to Europe to race a couple of World Cups.

My first ever World Cup was in L'Argentierre la Besse, France. It was a great experience in racing in a international race. I ranked 37th, 7 places out from semi-finals and was the 2nd best Canadian woman. The next world cup I attended was in Markleeberg, Germany. It was an artificial course and very different from the natural river racecourse in France. I ranked 42nd, I had missed a gate on my second run and my first run was slow. It was a great training trip, I learned a lot by going to these races in where I can improve on to get in the semi-finals and finals.

Our Canadian National Championships were held in my hometown of Chilliwack, BC. It didn't feel like any other Nationals because most of the National Team was racing in London for the Olympic Test event. It was an exciting week of training and racing, the river was very high for August but it was still race able. The courses that were set for the race were very challenging, exceptionally the Senior day. On my first run of Sunday I missed the gate that was the most challenging offset of the course. I knew I had to make some changes for my second run If I wanted to be Canadian Champion for the second time. I pulled off a clean run and was very pleased. It was a close race but I managed to get on top to name myself Canadian Women's Senior and Junior Champion for the second year. It was a great race put on by our local club and I say thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors for the event.

I am training in Ottawa this fall and I will be taking a month long training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina, the site of the 2012 Olympic Team Trials. It is important that I get as much training time as possible on the course as it could decide who will go to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. That is my dream, my goal to go to the Olympics and this is one of my chances. I am training hard and getting as much workouts as I can to get myself ready for these upcoming Trials. The first ever Youth Olympic Games are being held for the next two weeks and the Opening Ceremony will be on the 14th. There are so many athletes here, it's interesting to see all the diverse individuals and their regimes.Up to today Singapore is doing a great job hosting this huge event, the accommodation is awesome and all the activities we can do are too. They are doing a great job on the many choices of food and the quantity too. It's very hot here, we were in one of the many malls they have when it started pouring so it's very wet too.

CBC or CTV is supposedly showing highlights nightly so check it out. But I spoke too soon; I have 5 days at home and then I fly to Singapore for the first ever Youth Olympic Games! I am honored to have the chance to attend but I am also very excited! Enough talk of what is going to happen, let me share my summer.

I arrived in Ottawa during exam week, ready for warm weather and great training with Ottawa River Runners coach Jamie Cartwright. What I wasn’t expecting was a premature baby coming from a surprised Jamie and relieved wife Katie. Cierra was born smack-dab in the middle of the week with us exasperated athletes left with no coach. Thankfully Marian Davidson was able to drive up from Charlotte, NC ahead of schedule to help coach us. So after an early baby, my first ever earthquake (We were at the course when it happened!), the week had passed and we were on our way to Toulouse, France for the Junior World Championships.

We arrived in Toulouse sleepy but amazed from the European feel of everything. After grabbing brioche and having to wait for Connor Curson to bus to the airport. After tying four boats on the Volvo, we were leaving Toulouse for Foix(the location of the race). We had taken the long scenic route so it took a little longer than the usual freeway drive but we got to see more of beautiful France. The course was quite extraordinary, there was viewing stands, full path beside the river and of course, the river looked great!

Our accommodation was awesome; the cabins we stayed in were roomy with a full kitchen. The owners were welcoming and happy (when other people smile, you smile too).

Training was fun; it was an exciting river and was great to race on. After placing 15th after the races I feel mediocre because I know I could’ve done better but it was still a good result for my first real international big race. It was good trip and a great experience for my first trip to Europe. Thanks to my coach Jon Allen for coaching me up to World Championships.

Getting back to Canada I had two weeks training in Ottawa then leaving for Minden, Ontario for a week of camping before the Canadian Championships.

Minden is such a great course; it’s hidden in the woods of Ontario and sadly doesn’t get used a lot. It’s challenging but is super fun to paddle and train on. There can be two courses for seniors and juniors because the whole river can be used. The junior and masters race is held on the lower portion of the river starting right below the falls. The junior race was good as I placed first in the junior women category.

I trained well all week but somehow the senior race didn’t go so well as I had planned and hoped. It was a moderate course but it was somewhat easy to mess up. My first runs I wasn’t concentrated and unprepared so it was really slow. My second run was faster but I had touched 5 2-second penalty gates which is not how I paddle. It was a race to learn from and I have to put it behind me and move on to fall/winter training.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at Nationals( you guys did a great job!) and to Jamie Cartwright who coached me before and after World Championships and the Penman family for letting me home stay with them. And to Marian Davidson and Connor Curson for their coaching and chaperoning in Foix. Also for Western Canoe and Kayak for their help to help me reach my goals and dreams.

I am looking forward to the Youth Olympics and to represent Canada in this exciting chance to expand myself and to meet new people.

Wish me luck and safe travels everyone!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jazmynedenhollander.blogspot.com/2010/08/its-when-clouds-break-apart-and-sun.html' title='Im Back! April and May just flew past and it feels like Team Trials hasn't even happened yet! Ok, maybe I am exaggerating a little for I know I made Junior National 2010 Team and being 2010 Junior Champion. I also made National Senior "B" Team and ranking 3rd through out Senior Team Trials. I wasn't able to make percentage to earn myself a spot on the "A" Team but It was a race against myself and not against anyone else. Whistler and Squamish were great and there was reasonable weather through the two weeks. I got to stay in a awesome homestay near the Whistler Village. I had my first acupuncture session caused from a hole ride that strained my side. It was quite an experience, a painful experience at that. But fortunately my pain was rewarded and I was at top shape after it. Both of the courses were great to paddle and train on, Rutherford being obviously the most challenging one. It really is a great course to train on because most European courses are like it. They still need a little work on it but it's definitely one of the best in Canada.

I'm leaving on June 18 to Ottawa for a week long training camp and from there I will depart with all my other teammates for Foix, France for the Junior World Championships. It's my first time traveling to Europe and I am very excited to see all the European competitors I am racing against.

Here's a local newspaper article
http://www.bclocalnews.com/fraser_valley/theprogress/sports/94285689.html

Crunch Time

Well, less than a month to go till Team Trials, I'm finally realizing that it is here.

Recently I have raced two local races, the Rich Weiss Memorial and the Cowichan. Tamahi was at a good level for the young Albertans who came out for a training camp. I was first womens and third overall. The prizes were especially handy( a flashlight) for we had no power at my house because a tree branch ripped out the power lines. No power for about 5 days is pretty brutal when you have a well.

The cowichan race was situated on the Cowichan River near Duncan, Vancouver Island. I left bright and early with fellow racers and my coach and ate the infamous expensive ferry food. The river was higher than the last time I was there. There was a good turnout, Dan Norman, the race organizer; had a bunch of his students out there on the water. I was the fastest boat that day but I wasn't that excited about my runs.

Countdown to Trials begins!

50 more days!

Hello there! April 1st and that means a month and a little till Canadian Trials. So much has happened, I don't know where to start. So I decided not to go to Charlotte for it was too much money for two little races, but something else came my way.

Every year my school, Sardis Secondary holds a Strongman Competition, It was from March 22 to 26. I was reluctant to enter for fear of injuring myself but everyone else urged me to enter. There were events such a Tire Flip, Sled Pull, Sandbag Shuffle, Sled push and Farmers Carry. It lasted all week, and there were about 7 girls.

First day was the Sled Pull, You had a huge heavy-duty rope to which you had to pull a 90 kg sled. I had never done anything like that before except maybe a tug-a-war in elementary school. I was really nervous because it was at lunch and praticaly the whole school watched you. I had gotten in third( did I mention I was the only grade 10 too?).

The next day, Tuesday; it was the Sandbag Shuffle. There were 4 different weight sandbags in 4 corners, you had to get all of them in the middle circle. On my try I lifted the most heaviest one well with no mistakes or error. I then ran to the second heaviest and almost dropped it trying to pick it up, I guess I was to excited and didn't take my time. I then kind of stumbled to the middle circle without a firm grip on the sandbag and tripped. I thought I could throw it and not keep holding on, but that didn't happen. I guess I was still holding on the sandbag as it hit the floor thus twisting my right arm and sending immense pain through it. It had hurt like I had broke it but I thought I should really finish this and get the point. I then ran to the third heaviest and rolled it to the middle as I couldn't have used my right arm. Though unexpectedly I started to hear a little cheering a clapping but then I heard the whole gym roaring, banging and cheering. Someone told me I had got a Standing ovation by the whole audience! I finally got to the lightest sandbag and lifted it to the end. My arm had really hurt so I left right after to go to the ER to get an Xray just to be sure. The wait wasn't that bad, only 31/2 hours by the time I got home. My elbow was the area that was injured but it was only hyperextended so no muscle-tearing.

The rest of the day I iced my elbow every 15 mins to ensure a fast recovery. The next event was the Tire Flip. You had to lift a 200lb tire 10 times, but it was only half because half of the tire would stay on the floor. I really still wanted to do the competition so I just pushed through all the events and ended up 1st in Lightweight girls, I didn't think I would win. Another surprise was I had won the prestigious "Most Inspirational Performance" award which was pretty cool.

The Ceder Race was on March 13 and 14 and thanks to local paddler Dave Zimmerman for letting me and my coach stay at his house for one night, The steaks were awesome! The water was lower than last time but it still was fun to race.

Rich Weiss is coming up next weekend on Tamahi river, Let's hope its not too high for all the Albertans coming out.

Hello 2010!

Hello everyone,
I'm sorry I haven't got around to updating, It's been so busy! The race was pretty fun, It was nice to just paddle and not stress as much. The semi final and final course was ridiculously hard, everyone was missing gates.

Nationals this year I must admit were pretty awesome. I probably became the youngest girl to ever be National Champion in both Sr. and Jr. I think that race has been my best runs yet ever. Canadian National Champion 2009!

It is now training: Loops running and lifting weights, trying to get out as much as I can before it gets freezing.

Back home, one long summer over.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I got back yesterday afternoon from Skookumchuck( a really awesome tidal wave) and before that, the BC Championships were at our new artificial course Rutherford.

I've been gone for most of the summer being in Ontario and Quebec for the juinor tour and drove back to Kananaskis, Alberta for Pan Ams/Canadian Nationals.
Nationals went really great for me, I raced very well and became Junior( not really a surprise there) and Senior National Champion(big surprise there!). And I won the Podium Prospect award for the third time running now. I was and am really excited about racing and beating all the older girls.
A whole bunch of European paddlers came out and I was really honoured and excited for them to be racing and watching them race.

This was a really good paddling summer with lots and lots of paddling. No big injuries and only some aches and pains. Having the summer series before Nationals I think was great for me because I was already in the racing feel for Nationals and it just felt really natural to paddle each course. But grinding down to the last few days I just felt exhausted and tired( maybe a few rest days would be better for next time).

Now school is slowly creeping upon me and the training season now begins. I hope this sunny weather stays and school be delayed.

Finished!

School is finally over! It was a great turnout and even Keen Footwear was there giving out free socks, hats and more!
Almost a week ago Me and my mom went to Vancouver Island and drove about a hour to the Cowichan River to do a race there. We were the only ones there from the mainland(the rest didn't want to go) so there weren't as much racers. Whew.

YAY!!! Team trials in about 1 1/2 months!! May 30, 31st, both junior and senior races are held at the pumphouse in Ottawa, Canada. :D I've been training a lot and going to the gym more often to get readyand pumped. The National coach came out to Chilliwack for a training camp after spring break and other girls came out too. It went really good and although Alberta athletes came they thankfully didn't bring any snow.

The weather in the Wack has been really amazing! It was up in the 20's a few days ago, but as it is spring rain has to come some time( predicted for this weekend:( ).

The end of school is only just beginning and I'm trying not to stress about all the homework I'm gonna have when I get back and the exams to study for, I can wait!

As I havnt been able to come on and update a few months ago I was awarded the 2009 Premiers Athletic Award and went to Vancouver for the wonderful little ceremony they did. I was so surprised and happy to win it. My grandma, Mom and I went down together and took the sky train there. It was very fun and a great experience for me and It was so cool to meet the Premier of B.C.!

Training and waiting.

Hey
The snow is finally gone and its slowly turning into spring. I've been training on and off the water a lot and usually focusing on school. I'm very excited because races are coming up very fast and I can't wait. I'm also excited for when I go to Charlotte again in Feb. I will pick up my new Galasport boat! I'm so excited to see and paddle it. I hope I can get some pictures of it when I bring it home. Chilliwack's has been pretty plain and nothing really big happened lately( except for all the mudslides from the rain:P). So it's been pretty laid back here. Also I don't expect it to get any warmer either:(.
Can't wait for hott summer!

Yechh, storms and snow(lots of snow).

Well came back from reasonably warm North Carolina to come home- windy storms and lots and lots of snow. Charlotte was really good though, got to experience working with the national coaches of which I haven't worked with yet, almost got stuck in the conveyer belt(no worries, pulled the emergency rope just in time). And then when I was all packed and ready to go on the 21st, My flight was cancelled. It took some convincing out of the flight helper lady but I soon got a non stop flight to Seattle on the 24th. I didnt actually know how much snow there was but I heard it was a lot. And well, When I got home, I wished I lived in Charlotte. Sure I like the snow, but when you have to paddle in it with layers of clothing, it gets a little annoying. I did a little quading n my back yard and now I am doing a 3 day camp up here in Chilliwack on the low water tamahi. It's pretty funny cause I have to wear snow boots to trudge through the snow to actually get to the water. Toby and Connor came to the Wack To do some training and cross- training with Ricky. I got to do some river runs like the canyon(which was so awesome) and paddle some gates on Tamahi. So then Toby and Connor also came up here to do the Thompson( Big volume, crazy swirly lines river) So Toby Connor Ricky and I went up on Saturday to do this river run. It started to rain and there was a accident on the highway so we had to wait about a hour. So we get up there and its super cold so we hurry to dress and get on the water. We warmed up and then paddled off! It was a great river run, no swims and some great surfing! Thank you Toby and Connor from taking me out for some good paddling. So then today me and Ricky went to do some gates at Tamahi so we had to rearrange some gates and I got out of my boat a lot so the second I got out of my boat I guess I didn't put it on the rocks enough and when I was pulling up the gate I saw my boat floating down the river! So I yelled at my mom and went sprinting down the rocks. Luckily Ricky was there to help save it and it was all good. It went down the pretty calm side and didn't get any water in it. I walked it back up to the top and got back in and paddled some more. Whew at least I'm doing boat repairs this week. :)

Back from a long trip.

Well I'm home again, after a month away summers finished. Quebec was really fun, Jonquire was very cool to stay in, and Nationals went pretty good. Nationals were pretty good weather this year and the course was pretty hard, lots of features in it. The racing was kinda iffy on the Quebec cup race the weekend before, didn't do so well in the race. I then trained the week pretty easy doing C1( paddling in a canoe, with a one blade, oar like paddle) and some K1. The sprint on Friday wasn't so great either( Just paddling down the course as fast as you can, no gates). There were lots of waves to try to miss. But the first day of Nationals on Saturday was really great, It was the junior race but the seniors could race too if they wanted to. I had a really good race beating all the juniors
so I was really happy with my runs( had lots of touches though:( ) On Sunday it was the seniors race and I had qualified to race in it. It was a really hard course to race and every one was making mistakes on it. My first run wasn't great as I had two fifty second penalties on my run. My second run was good though as it was the fastest one run of the womens. At last year Nationals in Chilliwack, BC, John Hastings(an whitewater slalom paddler started this award called the Podium Prospect Award. It is this award to get more kids in different kinds of boats like C1 or downriver. I had won it last year and again i won it this year by doing C1 on the course and racing. He is very generous in the prizes this year as he had raised $1600 in cash and prizes. Four people can win the award: Two cadet, men and women and two juniors men and women. I think it is an good incentive to get more paddlers in different kinds of races. Overall I thought that It was a great Nationals and I can't wait for next year in Kanannaskis, Alberta!

Hot Days.

Well I'm in Charlotte, North Carolina!!!
